Just dropping in to let everyone know that my absence from the blog has not been intentional negligence. The end of the semester and the beginning of a new one...traveling around with my parents...that would keep a normal person off the internet anyway. However, try as I might to find time, I was continually handicapped by internet strikes in France (who's surprised? France striking again??) and the increasingly hot political situation in Dakar. I'm posting a quick news article just so people get the idea of what is happening, but I hope to get caught up on my blog in the next few days so I can write more politically-oriented posts. I mentioned a few months ago that the elections were coming up this month, but there hasn't been anything out of the ordinary to report. However, now that the candidate list has been approved by a constitutional congress, shit has hit the fan--or, I should say, tires have been lit on fire and bricks thrown. Deaths are increasing as demonstrators fill the streets of markets and downtown squares. This is just a quick post to get everyone on the same page-but also to assure family/friends/whomever that I am playing it safe and staying away from any known demonstrations. Our program directors cancel classes if they feel like our district of Dakar will see any action. I will, however, be updating my blog with observations and insights into the political happenings. Inshallah everything will take a peaceful turn.
Please read the articles and keep Senegal in your thoughts.
I'll post again soon!
