My path to travel writing grew out of an life-long interest in anything international. I grew up in northern California and moved to Portland, Oregon as a teenager. For a short time, one of my parents lived on the island of Puerto Rico, leading to many unique experiences and exposures to new things. In addition, I grew up hearing stories of my grandmother living in Saudi Arabia, my aunt traveling in China, my parents residing in Germany, and many others.
Thus, I had an early interest in International Studies and pursued said degree at the University of Oregon. This blog began as a means of updating family and friends during my study abroad experience in Dakar, Senegal. However, over time I realized that my family and friends were either on my blog way too much, or my readership was expanding rapidly. My blog encompassed everything from recapping vacations, botched attempts at cultural immersion, and observations with my work and study.
As my work is in international non-profits, I have a long future of travel in some fantastic places ahead of me. Better yet, I'm going to be working for superb organizations doing work that should be shouted from a mountaintop. I will endeavor to relay candid and amusing accounts of life in this field, as the adventure of doing good work in communities abroad hinges on levels of integration and cultural observation.
